Antonio Scannagatti is a penniless musician who lives with his sister's family in the village of Caianello, but dreams of a call from Milan from the music publishers Tiscordi or Zozzogno that will guarantee him glory: he is in fact convinced that he is a musical genius.

Meanwhile, the mayor of the town tries to convince him to direct the village band, due to the sudden incapacity of the maestro, on the day of the homecoming celebration of the Italian-American gangster Joe Pellecchia, originally from Caianiello: Scannagatti, initially reluctant , accepts when the mayor's nephew, lying, promises him a recommendation to the publisher Tiscordi, passing off his American girlfriend Poppy as his secretary.

The day of celebration turns out to be a failure: Pellecchia would like to speak from the balcony of the town hall, but Maestro Scannagatti prevents him, making the band play continuously, until the Italian American gets furious and leaves. Scannagatti still goes to collect the prize and joins the mayor's nephew and his partner, who have left Caianiello and are guests of a bizarre company on Capri: here on the island the maestro mistakenly believes that he has managed to get an appointment with Tiscordi .

Scannagatti therefore leaves for Milan: on the train, he finds himself sharing the cabin of the wagon-lit with the Honorable Cosimo Trombetta, with whom he soon has an altercation after exasperating him. During the night, the two are relieved of their wallets by a charming thief who asked them for hospitality with a ruse; upon discovering the theft, the enraged Scannagatti blames the MP who is promptly arrested by the railway workers.

Once in Milan, Scannagatti meets Tiscordi in person, due to a misunderstanding: he was mistaken for a nurse capable of giving painless injections to the publisher, who has already fired numerous nurses. The misunderstanding leads to an altercation between the two, with the musician fleeing.

The misadventures are not over: Scannagatti is intercepted by his brother-in-law, from whom he stole the money for the trip to Milan, who threatens to kill him; to appease him, the maestro pretends to have obtained a contract from Tiscordi and takes him on stage, but in a puppet theater. At first Scannagatti manages to deceive his relative by pretending to be a puppet and performing a show, in which he performs dancing to the theme of Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.

However, his brother-in-law recognizes him and chases him with the switchblade. Surprisingly, Tiscordi by chance reads and likes a score of Scannagatti and the town of Caianiello pays homage to him: the honorable Trombetta is the one who unveils the plaque in his honour.
